Breaking Barriers in Healthcare

Accessible Toilets: A Step Toward Inclusive Healthcare at Safdarjung Hospital

Accessible toilets are a crucial yet often overlooked component of inclusive public healthcare infrastructure. As part of Anuprayaas , a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, in collaboration with VOICE Trust and SBICAPS , ten fully accessible toilet units have been successfully established at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

These specially designed toilets cater to a wide range of users, including people with disabilities, elderly patients, post-operative individuals, and those experiencing temporary mobility challenges. Strategically located within the Outpatient Departments (OPDs) , these facilities ensure that accessibility begins right at the point of care—making the hospital experience more convenient and respectful for all visitors.

Enhancing Dignity, Safety, and Independence

By offering safe, dignified, and independent access to essential amenities, these accessible toilets help reduce stress and physical barriers during what can already be a challenging time. This initiative marks a significant step forward in improving the overall hospital experience—particularly for persons with disabilities who frequently visit Safdarjung Hospital.

A notable feature of the project is the inclusion of all-gender signage , reflecting the initiative’s commitment to both gender inclusivity and universal design principles . These toilets not only uphold patient dignity but also highlight Safdarjung Hospital’s broader dedication to inclusive healthcare.

This initiative demonstrates the power of collaborative CSR partnerships in driving meaningful change:

  • Community-Centric Planning : The upgrades were carefully designed and implemented to meet the specific needs of disabled and elderly patients.
  • Scalable Model : The success of this project offers a replicable blueprint that other hospitals and public institutions can adopt—helping to expand inclusive infrastructure across the country.

Conclusion

The installation of accessible toilets at Safdarjung Hospital is more than just an infrastructure upgrade—it is a powerful statement about inclusivity, dignity, and equitable access to healthcare. Through strategic partnerships and thoughtful design, this initiative sets a new benchmark for accessible public healthcare facilities in India.
