Ooty Bus Stand Becomes More Accessible for Persons with Disabilities Under Coromandel International’s CSR Initiative
In a significant step towards creating accessible and inclusive public infrastructure, Coromandel International Limited, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has supported the development of accessibility features at the Ooty Bus Stand, Tamil Nadu. The project was successfully executed by Anuprayaas & Voice Trust
The initiative aims to improve independent mobility, navigation, and access to information for persons with visual, hearing, and mobility disabilities, ensuring that public transport facilities are usable by everyone.

Enhancing Accessibility at Ooty Bus Stand
Public transportation plays a crucial role in connecting people to education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities. However, many bus terminals continue to present barriers for persons with disabilities.
To address these challenges, a range of accessibility interventions were implemented at Ooty Bus Stand, including:
Tactile Flooring for Independent Navigation
Tactile guiding and warning tiles have been installed throughout key passenger movement areas of the bus stand. These tactile pathways help persons with visual impairments navigate independently and safely within the premises.
The tactile flooring guides commuters towards important facilities such as:
- Bus boarding bays
- Waiting areas
- Information points
- Ticketing and administrative offices
- Passenger amenities
Warning tactile tiles have also been provided at decision points and facility entrances to improve safety and orientation.
Braille Signages for Public Facilities
Braille Signs have been installed across various offices and passenger facilities within the bus stand. These signs allow persons with visual disabilities to independently identify and locate important spaces.
The signage system includes facility identification and route information, helping visually impaired passengers navigate the premises with confidence.
Braille Maps of Ooty Bus Stand
One of the key highlights of the project is the installation of a Braille Map of Ooty Bus Stand. The braille map provides an overview of Bus bay layouts & Passenger facilities. The map enables persons with visual disabilities to understand the overall layout of the bus stand before navigating the facility.
India Sign Language (ISL) Video Access Through QR Codes
To improve accessibility for persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, QR codes have been installed at strategic locations within the bus stand.
By scanning these QR codes, passengers can access Information about OOTY Bus Stand in Indian Sign Language (ISL) video OOTY that provides information about Bus stand facilities and Passenger services. This digital accessibility solution ensures that information is available in an inclusive format for the Deaf community.
Improved Accessibility Through Ramp Repairs & Installation of Support Railings
Hand railings were installed and strengthened at key locations to enhance safety and support for passengers with mobility challenges.
The railings assist:
- Elderly passengers
- Persons with locomotor disabilities
- Individuals requiring additional balance support
Braille labels were also incorporated on selected railings to further support independent navigation for disabled travellers.
